Lesson 6: Wigwams in the Forest (Objects, Position, and Perspective)

The instructor demonstrates drawing a single wigwam, as shown in the example drawing, and directs children to copy the drawing.

  1. Use a soft pencil with a blunt point.
  2. Make the lines heavy.
  3. Using several strokes, sketch the triangle of the wigwam with the branches sticking out at the top.
  4. Sketch a horizon line through where the branches cross at the top of the wigwam.
  5. Shade in a small triangle for the door.
  6. Add a little shading at the sides.
  7. Draw a little grass around the wigwam, which serves as the rest line.
  8. Use horizontal strokes to show some smoke coming out of the wigwam, if you wish.
  9. Have children practice drawing their own wigwams, until they master it.

Complete the following drill exercises. The instructor demonstrates drawing trees and wigwams and directs children to copy the drawings. Children should practice these drawings over the week.

  1. Draw a wigwam. Place one tree to the right, one to the left, and two farther.
  2. Draw a wigwam. Place one tree to the right and four farther.
  3. Draw a wigwam. Place one tree to the left, three farther and one nearer.
  4. Draw a wigwam. Place one tree to the left, one to the right, three farther, and one nearer.
